Gaining accreditation as a Masters Swimming Club Coach can be a rewarding personal experience and a valuable contribution to Masters swimming clubs. It will give you the skills to provide coaching at your club and guide your swimmers towards their goals.
There are different ways to become an accredited Masters Swimming Club Coach.
The Accreditation Pathway Guide provides an outline of the pathway and steps required to gain MSA Club Coach Accreditation.

Pathways to Accreditation – Club Coach Course
Pathway 1 – Group A
If you have never Coached before you follow Group A pathway.
- Complete online ASC Community General Principles Course and print certificate. This course is free and should take no more than an hour.
- Observe an adult swim squad under the supervision of a qualified coach for a minimum of 5 hrs and get sign off from a qualified supervising coach.
- Complete Club Coach Program Pre Registration Checklist Group A and send this to the Masters Swimming office in your state. The Branch office will then give you details of the next available Club Coach Workshop and details of how and when to register and the cost.
- Log in or create a new registration on the SAL Learning Portal Select and pay for the Club Coach Course ($95). Your club may reimburse you for this cost once you are qualified. This online component can take between 5 and 15hrs to complete depending on your competency. You can complete this any time and login as often as you need. You must print your certificate and send it to your Branch office prior to the Workshop.
- Register and pay for the Club Coach Course Workshop as advised by your Branch. Your club may reimburse you for the cost of the course once you are qualified.
- Attend the full day Club Coach Workshop. This workshop is a full day course and covers adult coaching theory, stroke fundamentals and a poolside practical assessment. You will be able to complete many of the assessments on the day, however, some additional assessments need to be completed after the workshop.
- Complete the Club Coach Workbook and all assessments. This will be provided to you in electronic format after the workshop and is generally due back within 12 weeks of the workshop. Submit it to your branch office for marking as advised by your Branch Coach Educator. Your workbook will be returned to you for your ongoing reference.
- Sign Coaches Code of Behaviour Form. (Coach Code Of Behaviour ) and return to your Branch office.
- Complete and log 30hrs of pool deck coaching. This needs to be coaching an adult squad under the supervision of a qualified mentor coach within 12 months. If you have been coaching or assisting on pool deck prior to the workshop, these hours can be included in your 30hrs provided they are fairly recent and signed off by your Coach Mentor or Supervisor. - Complete CPR course and submit documentation to your State office. This must be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation. CPR qualifications need updating every 12 months and must be kept current for your Coaching accreditation to remain valid.
- When all steps have been completed and submitted within the stipulated time frame your Branch office will send your Application for Club Coach Accreditation to MSA and you will receive your certificate and Coach ID soon after. This accreditation is valid for 4 years from date of issue.
- Attend Professional Development courses to maintain your coaching skills and provide evidence that you have been an active coach in this time.
- Fill in the Applications for New Coach Accreditation and send to your MSA Branch Application For New Coach Accreditation
Pathway 2 – Group B
If you have coached, assisted, supported or observed a Masters or other adult swim squad under the supervision of a qualified coach for a minimum of 10 hrs you follow Group B pathway.
- Complete Club Coach Program Pre Registration Checklist Group B with sign off by a supervising coach or club official for 10hrs of assisting/observing/coaching. Send this to the Masters Swimming office in your state. The state office will then give you details of the next available Club Coach Workshop and details of how and when to register and the cost.

Pathway 4 – Group D
If you hold a current SAL Bronze (or higher) licence but have little or no experience coaching adults or if you hold a current Bronze licence or higher, but have little or no experience coaching adults, you can register for the Masters Swimming Australia Club Coach Course through
EITHER: Masters Swimming Australia and follow Group D pathway
OR
Swimming Australia
- The Masters Swimming Club Coach Course builds on the pre-requisite knowledge of the SAL Bronze Training Program to apply swim coaching knowledge and skills specifically to adult swimmers.
- If you hold a current Bronze licence or higher, but have little or no experience coaching adults, you can register for the Masters Swimming Australia Club Coach Course through Masters Swimming Australia OR through Swimming Australia.
- If attending the Club Coach Course through Masters Swimming Australia, complete the Club Coach Program Pre Registration Checklist Group D. Send and a copy of your SAL Bronze (or higher) licence to the Masters Swimming office in your state. The state office will then give you details of the next available Club Coach Workshop and details of how and when to register and the cost.
- Register and pay for the Club Coach Course Workshop as advised by your Branch. Your club may reimburse you for the cost of the course once you are qualified.

Pathway 5 – Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)
If you have qualifications and significant prior learning and experience relevant to coaching adult swimmers. Coaches are able to apply to Masters Swimming Australia (MSA) for recognition of current competency (RCC) from prior learning and experience. RCC is a pathway toward achieving the MSA Club Coach Accreditation and will be granted when all the stated Learning Outcomes of the MSA Club Coach Course have been met, and the applicant can also show evidence of the course pre-requisites. - Download and complete the MSA RCC Application updated 2020
- In the event of partial completion of the learning outcomes, the assessor will outline which learning outcomes still need to be achieved, and what evidence is still required.
- It is recommended that all applicants attend some component of the Club Coach Workshop depending on the currency of their adult coaching experience.
- Sign Coach Code Of Behaviour and return to your Branch office.
